Pictured here is our South African distributor of Two Brothers Racing products, 2009 R1. Despite it’s bad ass appearance, it’s pretty much stock. Mods on it are: Two Brothers Racing titanium slip on’s, with a customized badge, braided steel front brake hoses, a modified rear brake reservoir, Pazzo levers, a 520 chain conversion 15/49 (-2 front, +2 rear), an aftermarket full length belly pan, and a decal kit.
Pics (and vid) were taken at the Track-Daze event, at the Phakisa Raceway in South Africa. Arno Bareiss, our Two Brothers Racing distributor in South Africa has a share in Track-Daze, and this was his first time on the track in anger with the new R1.
Here are some of his thoughts on the bike: “It takes a little getting used to, because the power characteristics are so different to the 08 model. And the sound is so different too, especially through the TBR pipes, …sweet. It feels slower than the 08 R1, because there’s no histrionics in the power delivery, but in reality you’re getting out the turns much quicker. It’s got buckets of low and mid-range power, compared to the 08. Once you’re used to it you can take advantage of the low and mid-range power. Handling is superb, the bike turns where you want it to go. By the end of the day I’d pretty much toasted the tires, spinning up the rear, and the front was moving around too, but it still just gives positive feedback, it’s very confidence inspiring, especially entering turn 7 off the back straight here, (it’s a 200km/h corner). Even on toasted tires, in the late afternoon, I equaled my personal best lap time I set on the 08 (on fresh tires), in Nov last year. Mods on the 08 were the same as on the 09, plus ceramic brake discs, smog block off’s, JuiceBox, K&N air filter, rebuilt front and rear suspension, and light weight bodywork. And, ahem…., I now weigh 5 kilos more since Christmas.
