Two Brothers Racing, Inc. presents James “Bubba” Stewart with the ultimate trophy.

Everyone knows that James “Bubba” Stewart has more wins on a 125 than anyone in history. What you might not know is that when he is not winning races on his 125 he is winning them on his Two Brothers Racing built Kawasaki KLX110.

In honor of his achievements Two Brothers Racing presented Bubba with the ultimate KLX110, a 24k gold plated Kawasaki KLX110. “It’s a trophy you can ride” says Joel Albrecht R&D manager at Two Brothers Racing, and long time friend of Bubba.

Dave Cullinan, head of business development at Two Brothers Racing, and Joel Albrecht (R&D Manager) spent over 3 months putting all the pieces together. The end result must be seen to believe.

Two Brothers Racing presented the special KLX110 trophy to Bubba the day before the final round of the AMA Chevy Trucks Motocross Championships held at Glen Helen Raceway.

How the bike made its metamorphosis from a stock KLX-110

It took three months under the expert supervision of Two Brothers Racing’s head of business development David Cullinan and master mechanic Joel Albrecht to transform the stock KLX-110 into a life-size trophy.

First, the stock KLX-110 was stripped down to the frame and all of the engine casings, fasteners and mounting hardware were removed. It was determined at this time which upgrades would be applied to the bike. Each of the hundreds metal parts including the frame, spokes and screws were then thoroughly stripped of all surface coatings. Any contamination of the metal surfaces would show up as imperfections in the final gold plating process. Prior the plating process it was decided to replace the majority of the stock screws with either anodized aluminum or titanium. After completely stripping all of the parts, they were then carefully polished to provide a flawless base over which to set the remaining layers.

After the initial polishing, a layer of copper was deposited via electrolyte bath to a uniform thickness. All pieces were polished once again and then overlaid with a stratum of nickel. For this application the combination of these two metals provided the perfect base over which to bond the final layer of 24 karat gold. For that last bit of added bling the exposed cap screws were fitted with diamond inlays after the final gold plate and polishing were completed.

As the metal pieces were being customized, the next challenge was to make the non-metal components match their gilded counterparts. Fabric for a gold seat was located and a local upholsterer was commissioned to construct both the seat and the crossbar pad. The plastics presented unique challenges as well, but ultimately a facility was located that could faithfully match the now golden engine parts. As a final touch, a customized graphics kit was created to dress out the bikes appearance. But don’t let this appearance fool you – underneath that gold exterior is a fully tricked-out, race-ready beast. Sporting among other things, a Stage 3 Engine kit with a high-performance exhaust system, a 4-speed manual heavy-duty clutch, RaceTech shocks and a Two Brothers extended swingarm, this bike is ready to go!

Arguably the two greatest challenges to the completion of the project were finding contractors and vendors who could be trusted to keep the secret, and the sheer volume of labor involved. Taking a KLX-110 from stock to completely tricked-out with the above laundry list of parts is a time-consuming job on its own, but the difficulty is compounded by the demands of the gold plating process. Joel and David executed this daunting task flawlessly and we applaud their efforts. The initial concept was to build out a high performance bike to be presented to Bubba, but Two Brothers Racing decided to go that extra step and build out a one-of-a-kind trophy for a one-of-a-kind rider. Here’s to you James, and Congratulations!
